Winter Weather & Travel Information
Essential Tips for a Safe & Enjoyable Stay at Cabin on the Cascades
Winter in the North Carolina mountains is breathtaking, but snow and ice can create travel challenges. Whether you’re on your way to the cabin or already here, it’s important to stay informed and prepared. Below, you’ll find essential information on road conditions, winter preparedness, and how to ensure a safe visit in Winter (typically November through March).
Road Conditions & Access
- Rainbow Mountain is the more difficult road in our neighborhood. It can become icy quickly, and even when plowed, travel can still be treacherous.
- Both main roads leading to the cabin are plowed when snow gets deep, but ice can still create hazardous conditions.
- In severe weather, parking up on the main road (Winkler’s Creek) and walking down may be necessary. You will see other cars that do this.
- 4WD or AWD is a must during winter months. We also highly recommend carrying snow chains, as road conditions can change quickly.
Most important rule: If a storm is coming, do not travel unless necessary. Roads can be dangerous, especially when it’s actively snowing, and plows may not have had a chance to clear them yet.

Winter Travel Recommendations
1. Stock Up on Essentials Before a Storm
- If snow or ice is expected, we highly recommend having enough food and supplies at the cabin in case travel becomes unsafe.
- The cabin is fully stocked with basics, but it’s always good to have extra snacks, drinks, and easy meals.
2. Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter Travel
- 4WD or AWD is required for safe travel.
- Snow chains are recommended, especially if a storm is forecasted.
- Many people carry bags of kitty litter or rubber mats in their car to help get unstuck if needed.
- Keep cold-weather essentials in your vehicle, including:
- Ice scraper
- Extra blankets
- Gloves & hat
- Flashlight & batteries
- Phone charger
- Bottled water & snacks

Power Outage Precautions & Water Supply
Make sure and keep your phones charged
If the forecast calls for ice or high winds, we strongly recommend filling the bathtubs with water before the storm. Since the cabin is on a well system, a power outage will temporarily stop the water supply, meaning toilets will not flush without stored water.
How to flush the toilet during a power outage:
1. Manually refill the toilet tank: Use a bucket to scoop water from the bathtub and pour it directly into the toilet tank (where the handle is). Then, flush as usual.
2. Bucket flush method: Pour a full bucket of water (about a gallon) quickly and directly into the toilet bowl. This should create enough force to flush the waste.
In an emergency, the creek has water that can be brought inside using pitchers or buckets to flush, but it’s much easier if you already have water stored in the bathtub ahead of time.
If you’re already at the cabin and just seeing this, don’t worry! If you have any concerns about road conditions, need recommendations, or have specific questions, please reach out directly. We’re happy to help!
If you have any concerns about an incoming storm or need assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out. Stay safe and prepared!
